Wood Storks - Satellite Tracking Project

Wood Storks are the subject of much investigation nowadays. One of the most successful projects that aim at species conservation is satellite tracking of Wood Storks. It was initiated to better learn the species biology, nesting and feeding sites' location, and even more. Four Wood Storks were captured to become the principal objects of investigation. Scientists took their blood samples and put little transmitters on their legs. These devices are meant to report the signals to biologists both from land and space.

The plusses of this type of research are evident. Scientists now have accessible data concerning current location of Wood Storks and evidence of their activity. Validity of this sort of information is not questioned. The devices allow tracking of the species with a great extent of precision. It is said that the radio transmitters can locate them with accuracy of several miles. Data is collected every fifth day and is a wonderful opportunity for scientists to better understand the ecology of the Wood Stork.

The significance of satellite tracking of Wood Storks is obvious when one comes to think about the impact it has on the public. By the means of this research, many students are capable now of following the Wood Stork's lifestyle through the Internet. This activity is a great leap forward towards nurturing an ecologically minded generation and helping them realize the importance of protecting Wood Storks.
