Chick photos often look different than the bird; it really doesn't develop its full color pattern until later on.
These birds nest in the treetops of cypress or mangrove swamps and, more recently, man-made impoundments. They protect themselves against such predators as raccoons by building their nests on islands or in tall trees over water. They are very intelligent creatures.

These birds are excellent fliers and they fly thousands of feet into the air and then glide for miles with head and legs outstretched. Wood storks descend from high altitudes and they can also perform amazing dives, rolls and turns in the air. Chick photos often look different than the bird; it really doesn't develop its full color pattern until later on.
