These creatures reach sexual maturity at about 4 years. The eggs are hatched after 28 to 32 days and the newly hatched chicks weigh about 2 ounces and are helpless and unable to fly. The eggs are hatched in the order they have been laid.

When the breeding season begins the colony of wood storks resounds with the noise of birds looking for mates and nesting sites. When a mate is found the pair builds a nest of sticks, vines, leaves and Spanish moss. There are usually two to five eggs that are laid one to two days apart.
